An Embarrasing Moment
When people ask me about memorable moments I've had over the years,
one that comes to mind is an experience I had when we played in Hazard,
KY
at the Hazard Country Club in the early '70s.
We had just finished a set and I walked outside to get some air.
It was very dark that night and I assumed I was standing in an open,
patio-type area. I heard someone call my name from a short distance
away. I couldn't really see anyone, but I did see the glow of a cigarette.
I started walking in that direction and about three or four steps
later I walked into a swimming pool - the deep end! I was only under
water for a second or two, but I vividy remember thinking, "Is
this how it's going to end for me?" The first thing I heard when
I surfaced was a lot of wild laughing and some lady saying, "Can
he swim?"
Luckily,
my bandmate, Bernie Faulkner, was from Hazard and he took me to his
Mom's house and found some dry clothes for me to change into. We
finished the night without further incident. I remember being teased
a lot. I was glad to get the hell out of there!
